Swiss Alps Travel Guide

We can’t say enough wonderful things about Switzerland, let alone the Swiss Alps. We have never traveled to a more family-oriented, clean and friendly country. The Swiss Alps has lots to offer albeit a slower pace. Take advantage of nature and the awe inspiring views. The summer and early fall months are the best for outdoor activities with the family due to the warmer weather. The people are extremely friendly and enjoy talking about their land. As you travel through the Alps you will notice most Inns and restaurants have small playgrounds for the children. You will often find parks throughout, even at the summit of various peaks. We stayed in Lauterbrunnen, just outside of Interlaken. Therefore, the following information will center around the Lauterbrunnen area.

Alpsindent1.pngWhat to Do:

Walk/Hike the trails: There are two trails that are scenic and easier to handle with small children.

Männlichen: From Lauterbrunnen take the train to Wengen. Take a short walk to the Männlichen Lift which takes you to the top of the ridge. Once you get off the lift go to the left and climb the small hill (hardest climb of the trail) and take in the views. This is a perfect photo opportunity so be sure to have someone take the perfect family picture. Head back towards the lift. Just beyond the lift is a small playground and restaurant if you want to stop for a brief play and snack. From here the trail leads you on a beautiful hour tour around the mountains. We had our daughter in the back pack carrier and she slept most of the way. It is a tranquil walk with stunning views. Best of all we loved the sound of the cow bells in the distance, which made for a perfect setting. About half way along the trail there is a rest area with benches. After about half an hour from the rest area you will arrive at Kleine Scheidegg. There are numerous restaurants, some with small playgrounds. Take the train here back to Wengen or continue on further to Jungfraujoch.

Lauterbrunnen Valley: For an easier hike, try walking in the Lauterbrunnen Valley along the Weisse Lütschine River. Watch the rapids and see cattle grazing as you take in the fresh mountain air.

Mountain Towns
:
Wengen is a great little town with shops, restaurants and hotels. If you are passing through, grab a picnic lunch and head for the large playground near the Männlichen Lift for fun and great mountain views. If you are not staying in the valley consider staying in a mountain town such as Wengen.

Jungfraujoch: The highest peak in Europe and offering the highest rail system in Europe. If you have the proper gear and are used to high altitudes, try to visit Jungfraujoch. This is not recommended for very young children due to the altitude and climate changes, even during the summer months. Once you reach the summit, the views are stunning and there are a few activities to keep the children happy, such as the observation deck, an ice palace, restaurant, sledding, skiing, and dog sledding.

Trümmelbach Falls: The first thing you see when you drive into Lauterbrunnen is the spectacular Trümmelbach Falls. Take a closer look at the falls by going up an elevator and peek at the falls from behind. Right next to the falls is a patch of land used as the landing grounds for many paragliders. If you happen to see one come down, stay to watch the landing.

Lake Thun and Lake Brienz: Two connecting lakes near Interlaken. Take a boat ride on either lake to see the view of the mountains above or the crystal blue waters of the lakes below. Boat tours are more common during the summer months.

Rafting: You can find adventure along the Weisse Lütschine River in the summer on a rafting trip. There are several tour operators in town who can arrange a white water adventure. However, the rapids may get too rough for some of the smaller children.

indent1.pngOff the Beaten Path:

Lucern: Picturesque beauty and old world charm. Walk along Chapel Bridge, stroll along the river for a great view of the beautiful swans and the magnificently clear waters.

indent1.png Dining:

Restaurant Oberland: Try a traditional dish of Rösti: hash browns with alpine cheese

Restaurant Schützen: Fabulous alpine cuisine with a fantastic view.

indent1.pngShopping:

Stroll the designer shops in the downtown area of Interlaken. For more traditional Swiss crafts and local favorites try wondering the streets in the mountain towns of Wengen and Mürren.

indent1.pngHotels:

Hotel Staubbach: Kudos to Rick Steves for this pick. An excellent hotel, just perfect for a family with children. They offer several suites with 3 bedrooms for an excellent price and view. The view of the Trümmelbach Falls is breathtakingly spectacular. Your stay includes free breakfast and the hotel provides a children’s play area indoors and out.

ctt-sm.pngTips:
Switzerland is a beautiful country. To take in all that it has to offer we recommend staying in the Swiss Alps and make day trips to see the other towns/cities. Since the towns of Lucern and Zürich offer sites that can all be seen in one day, we really found it unnecessary to warrant an overnight stay in these cities. Take advantage of the spectacular views of the Alps by using it as your home base for your entire stay in Switzerland. Driving in Switzerland is easy so don’t fret the day trip drives.
